Origins of this cuisine: My heritage

I was born in Barcelona, Spain, and have two brothers and a sister. My family is everything to me, and I wouldn’t choose to live anywhere else on earth. I have, however, visited a number of places all over the world. The food of my native country is incredible, but I have also found that Italy and many other European countries have a lot to offer.

I moved to Valencia with my family when I was 12 years old. Despite the fact that I was still in the same country, the people, culture and food were fairly different from what I had grown accustomed to. Prior to moving to Valencia, I had not done much traveling at all with my family. Moving to this area of Spain was one of the best things that could have happened to me, because it exposed me to things I never would have otherwise been exposed to.

When I was just 14 years old, I took a trip to America with my family. We visited New York City as well as a number of other places. The food that I found there was incredible, and it definitely had a huge influence on my decision to strictly follow the Mediterranean diet.

I ended up living in the United States for four years starting when I was 18 for school. I went to school in New York City, which is where I met a lot of great people and ate a lot of great food. I firmly believe even to this day that some of the best restaurants in the world can be found in New York City.

I have enjoyed eating fruits, vegetables, fish and other staples of the Mediterranean diet for many years now, but I first discovered it when I was 23 and had returned to Europe from college in the U.S. I wouldn’t trade the experiences I had in America for anything, because it gave me a unique perspective on the world as well as food in general.

My Spanish heritage has definitely played a very large part in my adopting of the Mediterranean diet. Many of the foods that people who are on this diet are encouraged to eat are already staples in Spain. I have even managed to convince some of my siblings in Spain to start this diet, and they love it just as much as I do.
